Uitwisselingsweek in oktober
In een regio als de Balkan waar de grenzen constant ter discussie staan, is identiteit een levend thema. Het onderwerp staat centraal tijdens een uitwisselingsweek in Nederland met jongeren uit Kosovo, Servië en Nederland van 5 tot 11 oktober. Bezoeken aan onder meer Europese Instellingen en het Joegoslavië tribunaal zijn ervaringen op zichzelf en tegelijkertijd aanleiding voor discussies.

Studenten bezoeken de nieuwste Europese staat

Van zondag 4 tot en met 10 mei reizen vijf Nederlandse studenten op uitnodiging van vredesorganisatie IKV Pax Christi naar Kosovo om daar met leeftijdgenoten uit Servië en Kosovo te praten over identiteit, etnische scheiding en Europese integratie van de nieuwe staat Kosovo. De reis vindt plaats aan de vooravond van de verkiezingen in Servië.
Op 17 februari 2008 heeft Kosovo de onafhankelijkheid verklaard. Dit leidde tot spanningen en protesten in Servische gebieden in Kosovo en in Servië zelf. Als gevolg van de erkenning van Kosovo door EU-landen en het sturen van EU politie en rechters naar de gloednieuwe staat is de Servische regering gevallen. Nieuwe verkiezingen vinden plaats op 11 mei. De Servische minderheid in Kosovo mag van het VN-bestuur niet meedoen aan deze verkiezingen.
Vijftien jongeren uit Servië, Kosovo en Nederland gaan in de week voor de verkiezingen in gesprek over identiteit en Europese integratie. Kan Kosovo een multi-etnische staat worden en kan het op termijn toetreden tot de EU? Bovendien gaan de jongeren zélf wat doen aan het wegnemen van de haat tussen de verschillende bevolkingsgroepen. Samen zullen de jongeren op 9 mei, Europadag, in Pristina Loesjeslogans verspreiden die aan het denken zetten.
De studenten ontmoeten beleidsmakers, politici en activisten en gaan in gesprek met ‘gewone burgers’. Ook bezoeken aan de Servische enclave Gracanica en de verdeelde stad Mitrovica zijn onderdeel van het programma. Later dit jaar reizen dezelfde jongeren naar Servië en in oktober zal een bezoek aan Nederland en de Europese Instituties in Brussel plaatsvinden.

Emil Andel (25) uit Waddinxveen, student Communicatie aan de Haagse Hogeschool; Hilko Blok (23) uit Amsterdam, student Sociale Psychologie aan de Vrije Universiteit van Amsterdam; Jacqueline van Dooren (20) uit Utrecht, studente Sociale Geografie aan de Universiteit van Utrecht; Evelijn Martinius (19) uit Amsterdam, studente Politicologie aan de Vrije Universiteit van Amsterdam; en Lenneke Sprik (22) uit Groningen, studente Internationale Betrekkingen aan de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen.

Presentation done right: Lawrence Lessig on various ‘Commons’

A while ago a lecture by Lawrence Lessig appeared on the internet. In it, Lessig makes the case that the Republicans, invented the internet. By making three important decisions, they encouraged competition and minimized the power of corporations to control or stifle innovation. By giving power to the ‘commons’, opportunity arose for innovators to invent technologies and appliances on top of these ‘free’ physical systems (telephone, internet, the radio spectrum). But will this freedom last?
Lawrence Lessig has long been an activist for ‘Creative Commons’, an alternative copyright system that allows content creators to be more free in how ’strict’ the copyright on their material is. Creative Commons gives others the right to use these materials for their own purposes in various degrees of freedom, rather than lock them out by using the conventional, very strict copyright. The basic idea is that freedom to use existing material, and expand on that (remix, for example), is essential to innovation, and even cultural development.
In this 40-minute lecture, Lessig broadens this concept and speaks of ‘Commons’ in a much more general sense. What’s particularly interesting to me is the way he presents his speech. Rather than just a dry monologue, he uses keywords, graphs, images and video to pepper his speech. This makes the talk easy to follow, much more entertaining, and showcases how presentational software can (and should!) be used.
If you’re tired of the horrible powerpoint presentations you’re usually subjected to, and interested in doing better yourself, I suggest you watch a bit of Lessig’s presentation to get an idea of what’s possible.

If you’re still interested, the book ‘Free Culture’ by the same author goes much more in-depth on the principals behind Creative Commons, and the history of copyright law.

De volgende stap in ‘Collaboratieve Journalistiek’ is gezet: Na een lange testperiode is Newsvine open voor het grote publiek.
Newsvine is in feite een samensmelting van een heel aantal nieuwe trends op webgebied (digg, del.icio.us, etc.). Het unieke aan Newsvine is dat het erg professioneel is opgezet en zelf de mogelijkheid biedt om geld te verdienen als ‘lid’.
